Uch Sharif is an ancient city of historical and Islamic significance located in Bahawalpur District. It is located 38 miles southwest of Bahawalpur. According to the 1981 census, the population was about 15,000, and now the population is over 30,000. The present occupation consists of three small settlements, Uch Bukhari, Uch Gilani and Uch Mughal.

The nearest railway station is Ahmadpur Sharqiyah, which is 12 miles away. On July 8, 1975, it was given the status of a sub-tehsil.

History of Uch Sharif

It was settled around 550 BC. Alexander the Great stayed here during his invasion of India. At the time of Muhammad bin Qasim’s conquest of Sindh, this city was politically, economically and culturally unique. Before the invasion of Mahmud Ghaznavi, Uchh was a province of Sindh and was ruled by Hindus.

From the time of Mahmud Ghaznavi, Islamic sciences came here. Maulana Safi-ud-Din Gazroni came in 1908. Here he founded an Islamic seminary, in which two and a half thousand students were studying at the same time. Sultan Shahabuddin Ghauri was the first coach of this institution. The Ghauri rulers then made Uchh their capital. With the fall of the Ghor Empire came the fall of Uch. During the Mongol invasions, most of the scholars migrated to Uchh and settled here.

Although the Mongols sacked the city several times, its importance did not change. During the reign of Humayun, the city came under the rule of the Mughal Empire and the city regained its former glory. However, after Aurangzeb Alamgir, the importance of Uch began to wane. Ranjit Singh tried to capture the city, but failed. However, the Abbasi of Bahawalpur incorporated it into their state.

Uch Sharif is the place of saints. Here are the tombs of Syed Jalaluddin Bukhari of Sadat Bukhara, his son Syed Ahmad Kabir Bukhari and his son Makhdoom Jahanian Jahan Gasht, Makhdoom Rajan Iqbal, Bibi Javindi, Hazrat Bahawal Haleem, Hazrat Bandgi Muhammad Ghous.
